ORGANISM IDENTIFICATION- METHOD TWO

BACKGROUND:

The Vitek R 2 Compact identifies bacteria and yeast based upon analysis of substrate utilization patterns. Selection of cards to be used depends upon the Gram stain results and growth conditions of the organism to be tested.

PRINCIPLE OF TEST:

The analyst prepares a suspension of a pure culture, standardizes suspension density with the DensiCHEKTM, selects the appropriate card and places the card and suspension into a cassette. The cassette is then placed into the instrument’s Fill Chamber. After the cards are filled, the user loads the cassette into the Autoloader/Reader Incubator and the cards are automatically scanned by an internal bar code reader, sealed and loaded into the Carousel/Reader Incubator. The Vitek R 2 Compact then analyses the card and generates a printable report.

The advantages of using automated analysis by Vitek R 2 Compact to identify organisms to species level compared with other traditional biochemical test kits such as API are faster turn around time and eliminating visual interpretation of colorimetric results.

SAMPLE REQUIREMENTS:

A submission form must be completed detailing the sample(s) to be examined. Any additional information that you have regarding identification, will help us to minimize turnaround time e.g. growth conditions, anaerobic/aerobic etc

Isolates can be submitted as broth or agar cultures. Once received, these will be streaked onto the appropriate agar, checked for purity, Gram stained and processed.
